AI4CH - Artificial Intelligence for Cultural Heritage

This project concerns the creation of a joint Italo-Israeli laboratory operating in the field of Artificial Intelligence applied to the Cultural Heritage field. On the Italian side, the laboratory brings together the experiences of the research institutes Bruno Kessler Foundation (FBK), the University of Trento (UniTN) and the University of Modena and Reggio Emilia (UniMoRe). On the Israeli side, the University of Haifa and the Technion are involved in the joint laboratory. All the three Italian partners are three nodes of the CINI National Laboratory for Artificial Intelligence and Intelligent Systems (AIIS-CINI).

AI4CH is funded by the Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation under the Call for the CONSTITUTION OF JOINT WORKSHOPS IN THE FIELD OF ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE - YEAR 2018.

The research groups participating in the project are:

For the italian side

  • Intelligent Interfaces and Interaction (I3) (FBK) (Head: Massimo Zancanaro)
  • 3D Optical Metrology (3DOM) (FBK) (Head: Fabio Remondino)
  • Multimedia and Human Understanding Group (UNITN) (Head Profs. Nicu Sebe and Elisa Ricci)
  • Ict and Cognitive Science Lab (ITeCS) (UNITN) (Head: Massimo Zancanaro)
  • AimageLab (UniMoRe) (Head: Prof. Rita Cucchiara)

For the israeli side:

  • Research group on innovative technologies for Cultural Heritage (University of Haifa) (Head: Prof. Tsvi Kuflik)
  • Computer Graphics and Multimedia Laboratory (Technion) (Head: Prof. Ayellet Tal).

The main research lines that will be addressed by the Joint Laboratory will concern:

    a) Intelligent extraction of information content from data collections

    b) Intelligent support to knowledge exploration

with particular attention to the fruition, the use and involvement of visitors, and the support to the experts in the Cultural Heritage field.

In particular, each Italian research institute involved will be in charge of co-financing the activation of a specific Research Doctorate. The activities of these doctorates are and will be coordinated with Israeli partners and will try to be as integrated as possible to better enhance the research activity of the Joint Laboratory.

The three-year plan also includes the organization of Workshops, Summer Schools, and exchanges of researchers/professors in order to make the research activities more integrated with Israeli partners and, therefore, the scientific collaboration more solid and capable to continue beyond the lifetime of the project.
