Supercomputing Unified Platform

The aim of the project SUPER - Supercomputing Unified Platform is to create the prototype of an advanced digital infrastructure for the calculation, processing of big data volumes and the consolidation of enabling services for the research of excellence and technological innovation with a broad application spectrum. A particular focus is placed on the domains of Supercomputing, Genomics, regenerative medicine and bio-banks, advanced materials and innovative production systems.

For the project Super, the services offered by CINECA and INFN are strengthened and federated, and subsequently extended to those of ENEA, CMCC and in the perspective of INAF and INGV. The project is guided both by the specific cases of use within Big Data and Supercomputing (concerning the institutional role of the two bodies primarily involved), and by the other two areas identified for regional research infrastructures, also with reference to the Regional Strategy for Intelligent Specialisation: biomedicine (bioinformatics, bio-banks, regenerative medicine) and materials (innovative materials and production systems).

The project was born to create a High Performance Computing and Big Data Processing centre of a global class at a national level, with location in Bologna. It proposes the strengthening of the regional hardware infrastructure, the creation of access services to supercomputing and storage resources for the scientific communities.

The project is divided into two sub-programs of 18 months each. The resources allocated for the first phase are € 4,000,000.00; those that can be allocated for the second phase cannot exceed € 3,500,000.00.
